Sunny Start Preschool's goal is to create and provide a fun, safe and
caring learning environment in which the whole child is addressed;
​giving students the tools they need to enter kindergarten in a
positive and self confident manner.

Learning Opportunities

  • Theme based  activities, crafts and centers that are developmentally appropriate, allowing students to explore and expand their learning at their own pace
  • Learning through play centers include writing, play dough, dramatic play, building blocks, puppets, books, cars, trains, dollhouses, fine motor, math, water and bean tables
  • Our literacy focus includes the Jolly Phonics program in which we introduce students to letters of the alphabet and their sounds. The Handwriting Without Tears program supports students in learning letter formation and printing. Both programs are taught through whole group, small group and one on one activities.
  • Social and emotional skills are explicitly taught to provide students with skills to label their emotions and learn strategies on how to handle these emotions appropriately.  We teach students problem solving solutions with their peers, allowing them to grow to independently solve these problems with adult support always available. 
  • Our outside play space and a playground allow for physical activity and gross motor development opportunities
  • Field trips (out of school & in school) and guest speaker visits occur throughout our school year

About the Teachers

Charlene Cummings is the owner, director and teacher of the 4 year old classes. She received her Bachelor of Education degree with an Early Childhood Minor from the University of Alberta in 2003.  She has been teaching preschool for over 15 years now, continuing with professional development and opportunities for growth. 

Cassie Wiseman is the teacher of the 3 year old class.  She graduated with a BA in Child and Youth studies from Brock University in St. Catharines, ON and currently holds a Level 3, or Childcare Supervisor qualification. Cassie has been passionate in educating preschool students for the past 15 years.

Sandy Friesen is the educational assistant for all classes. She received her Child Development Assistant Certificate and Level 5 in Sign Language. She has worked at Sunny Start Preschool for over 9 years.  She has many years of experience working with students with a variety of skills and needs.
